About Lunamoth
Lunamoth is a South London based collective formed by harpist Tom Moth. Having performed with several bands for a number of years, Tom retreated into his cocoon, and re-emerged as Lunamoth in 2001. Fusing electronic harp with effects, beats, loops and atmospheres, Lunamoth’s music can take you on a journey from the cool to the chaotic; the ambient to aggressive. Following the release of the well-received debut album Scar Diaries in 2001, Lunamoth’s first single Squirrels…Yeah! was released through Big Square Records to great acclaim. International DJ Magazine ranked the single at the top of its ‘Office Stereo Playlist’, and described it as “frankly bizarre, but utterly ace….tight, twisted and steppy with an old skool flavour”. Squirrels…Yeah! later went on to receive the remix treatment from Future Funk Squad and has been heard in clubs up and down the UK. Lunamoth’s cover version of the Bjork song Army Of Me was chosen to feature on the album Army Of Me – Remixes & Covers, released on One Little Indian records in May 2005. The album was released to raise money for victims of the 2004 Asian tsunami, and features twenty versions of the song, chosen by Bjork herself out of a total of around 600 possible versions. Lunamoth’s interpretation was put forward as a standout track in several publications, including allmusic.com and The Guardian. Stylistic comparisons have been made to artists such as Aphex Twin, Bjork, Zero 7 and Massive Attack, though Tom himself likes to indulge in many different musical directions, with influences from folk, jazz, soul, rock and classical music. Lunamoth’s past recordings have seen collaborations with hip-hop artists, opera singers, Elvis impersonators and heavy metal bands. Seemingly eclectic, yet with a distinction all of its own, Lunamoth’s music has featured in theatre productions and films, as well as receiving radio airplay from BBC radio’s ‘Late Junction’, Jonathan Ross and the late John Peel. …a shattered cocoon… is the latest release in the Lunamoth catalogue. A 6 track, semi-improvised mini-album, recorded on location in Germany on a palmtop 4-track, it moves through various moods, starting with the chilled Hot Storm In a Familiar Season, through the industrial menace of Tune For Bones and Steve Reich-esque The Guilt, and ending with the haunting Look At What You Could Have Lost. Deliberately brief and lo-fi, …a shattered cocoon… shows the further development of Lunamoth’s sound, and serves as an elegant and exciting taster for their next full-length album Tractors For the Damned, to be released in late spring/early summer 2007. As well as Lunamoth, Tom has been in much demand as a session musician, and has worked with numerous artists within the last five years. Most recently, he has been seen performing alongside Eva Eden whilst she supported Patrick Wolf on his recent UK tour, at venues such as Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms, Nottingham Rescue Rooms, and Manchester Academy 3.
