Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir (born 23 April 1999), known mononymously as Laufey, is an Icelandic singer and songwriter. Her musical style incorporates elements of jazz pop and classical music. She began performing as a cello soloist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15. She was a finalist in the 2014 edition of Ísland Got Talent and a semifinalist on The Voice Iceland in 2015. In 2021, Laufey released her debut EP, "Typical of Me", and graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2022, she released her debut album, "Everything I Know About Love", which appeared on various Icelandic and United States music charts. Her second album, "Bewitched" (2023), won Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards (2024) and included the single "From the Start". Her third album, "A Matter of Time", was released on 22 August 2025 and won Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards. Laufey was born on 23 April 1999 in Reykjavík, Iceland. Her father is Icelandic and her mother is from Guangzhou, China. Her mother is a classical violinist and the daughter of Lin Yaoji, a violin educator at the Central Conservatory of Music in China, which Laufey has cited as an influence on her musical development. Her father works as a finance executive. She has an identical twin sister, Júnía Lín Hua Jónsdóttir, who is a violinist and has worked as her creative director. She lived in Washington, D.C., for two years before moving back to Reykjavík in 2008, where she attended Háteigsskóli. She began learning piano at age four and cello at age eight. As of October 2023, she resided in Los Angeles. On 6 April 2020, Laufey released her debut single, "Street by Street", which reached number one on Icelandic radio charts. On 30 April 2021, she released her debut EP, "Typical of Me", which included "Street by Street" and six additional songs, many of which were written in her college dormitory. The EP received critical attention, including praise for her rendition of "I Wish You Love", and was included in lists of notable releases of 2021 by publications such as American Songwriter. It also gained attention from artists including Billie Eilish. Laufey also posted jazz standard covers on TikTok, which were described by The New York Times as "casually elegant". She signed with AWAL, a label that allows artists greater control over their recordings. In 2021, she hosted a weekly program on BBC Radio 3 titled Happy Harmonies, which featured music from a range of genres. She performed at the London Jazz Festival the same year and collaborated with the Philharmonia Orchestra on the release of "Let You Break My Heart Again". In December 2021, she released the single "Love To Keep Me Warm" with singer Dodie, a cover of "Winter Weather" by Ted Shapiro with an additional bridge section written by both artists. Laufey made her US network television debut in 2022 as a musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, performing "Like the Movies" from "Typical of Me". Her debut album, "Everything I Know About Love", was released on 26 August 2022 via AWAL and received positive critical reception. The album reached number one on Billboard's Alternative New Artist Album chart upon release. In August 2023, she signed a global publishing agreement with Warner Chappell Music. Her second album, "Bewitched", was released on 8 September 2023 and received critical acclaim. Prior to its release, she made sheet music available to fans for pre-save promotion. The album earned her first Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, where she also performed alongside Billy Joel. She supported the album with a year-long world tour. In March 2024, she released a reissue titled "Bewitched: The Goddess Edition", preceded by the single "Goddess". In 2025, she announced her third album with the release of the single "Silver Lining" on 3 April. She subsequently released the singles "Tough Luck" on 15 May 2025, "Lover Girl" on 25 June 2025, and "Snow White" on 7 August 2025. The album, "A Matter of Time", was released on 22 August 2025. Following its release, she began the A Matter Of Time Tour, which started on 15 September 2025 in Orlando, Florida, and is scheduled to continue through March 2026 with performances in Europe. She was announced as a performer at Coachella 2026. In February 2026, she released the single "How I Get" on 25 February and announced an extended edition of her album titled "A Matter of Time: The Final Hour", released on 10 April 2026. She was also announced as the headliner for Season 14 of Fortnite Festival, with related in-game content and a concert experience titled Laufey: The Final Hour, which featured performances of "Madwoman", "Lover Girl", and "Too Little Too Late".
