About Ladybaby
Ladybaby is a Japanese kawaii metal musical group that originally consisted of models Rie Kaneko and Rei Kuromiya, along with Ladybeard, the cross-dressing persona of Australian professional wrestler Richard Magarey. The group is known for combining idol pop aesthetics with metal-influenced instrumentation and extreme vocal styles. The project began after Magarey, originally from Adelaide, Australia, moved to Hong Kong in 2006 to pursue stunt and wrestling work, where he developed his Ladybeard persona. He later moved to Tokyo in 2013, where he formed Ladybaby with Kaneko and Kuromiya. Their debut single, "Nippon Manju", was released in 2015 and presented as a celebratory song about Japanese culture. The accompanying music video went viral online, gaining rapid international attention and reaching approximately one million views within two days. Following this early success, the group released a second single in 2016, which reached number 15 on Japan’s daily Oricon chart. Shortly afterwards, Ladybeard left the group, and Ladybaby rebranded as "The Idol Formerly Known as Ladybaby". The remaining members continued performing and released further material, including the singles "Pelo" and "Pinky! Pinky!". In 2017, Rei Kuromiya left the group, citing dissatisfaction with idol industry conditions and health issues related to touring demands. Her departure effectively ended the activities under the temporary rebranding. A compilation album titled "Beside U" was released in early 2018. Later in 2018, the group returned under the original Ladybaby name with a new lineup that included Rie Kaneko alongside new members Nana Ikeda, Emily Arima, and Fuka Karasawa. This iteration marked a renewed phase of activity, including new releases such as "Hoshi no Nai Sora", and limited involvement from Ladybeard, who contributed to a B-side recording. In 2019, it was announced that Ladybaby would suspend activities following a final performance in January 2020, accompanied by the release of a compilation album titled "Reburn". In 2023, the project was revived again in collaboration with the idol collective Heroines under the name Ladybaby ✕ Heroines Project. Auditions were held for new members, and a new lineup was announced later that year, with a fourth-generation group debuting in December 2023 at HEROINES FES.
