About Kper
Kper is the moniker of journalist and overall geek Laurent Fintoni. Under his real name he has been writing, editing and doing various other interesting/nerdy (delete as appropriate) things with words and sounds online and in the real world since 2002. These interesting/nerdy things include creating and running the Spin Science online resource, presenting, co-running, masterminding and programming the Turntable Radio and Rhythm Incursions podcasts, writing about music and other things for magazines and sites worldwide (including ukhh.com, Serie B (Spain), ATM (UK), Japanzine (Japan), Shook (UK), and more) and founding and co-running the Original Cultures project, a non-profit cultural exchange platform. Under the moniker Kper he plays records which he thinks shouldn't be gathering dust in his room. When he lived in London between 97 and 2007 he held a few residencies, most notably at the Dragon Bar in Old St where alongside MC Chu-I he ran the open mic sessions Sunday Cypher between 04 and 06. There he played beats and more alongside 2tall for resident MCs Chu-I and Asif and guests. Together they played at the Lovebox festival in 2006, and did a few other one off specials at various venues around London. After moving to Tokyo in January 07, Kper has regularly appeared at the Back To Chill night, hosted by Goth Trad and the BTC crew, Tokyo's only monthly dubstep dance. The link came from hosting a special guest set from Goth Trad at the Sunday Cypher when the man visited London in 2006. Since being invited by Goth Trad in Feb 07, Kper's appeared on the bill regularly, playing at clubs including Saloon, Club Asia and Heavy Sick Zero alongside the likes of Kode 9, Skyfish and Rumi. He left Tokyo in late 08 and headed back to Europe, with no vinyl at hand the music making and mixing process moved entirely to digital. The first proper result of this, apart from the mixes mentioned below, is the Wonk Fonk mix, which was put together to accompany a series of articles he wrote for Serie B magazine. It's since then garnered a fair bit of recognition with The New Yorker, Spannered, Percussion Lab and others giving it props. He's currently working on a follow up to Wonk Fonk with 2tall. While not released under the name Kper, you can hear mix monthly on Rhythm Incursions. The moniker Kper has also been used by Laurent to release a series of mixes, which have the common point of not fitting the general mould of being around the 70/80mins mark. Instead these mixes generally last 120/140mins and include a whole heap of styles and genres, complete with edits, samples and more. The first in the series was done by combining decks, vinyl, digital files and ableton, while the second was done entirely in Ableton due to the fact that all his records were in storage in the UK. There are currently two mixes in the series, Packing Shit Up and Attention Deficit Disorder, both of which are available online for free on his blog.
