About Jure Pukl
Jure Pukl (* 7 October 1977) is a Slovenian jazz musician (tenor and soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, composition) of modern jazz. Pukl first studied classical and jazz saxophone playing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag. There he won the competition for a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music, where he had lessons with Joe Lovano and George Garzone. He then obtained his master's degree at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. From the early 2000s he worked first in the Slovenian and (North) Italian jazz scene; first recordings were made in 2002 with bassist Robert Jukić (How About That!?) and Gaetano Valli (Oltre Confine). In mid-2003 Pukl recorded his debut album The Wizard in Ljubljana with his Virus Quartet. In the following years he played with Boško Petrović, Maja Jaku, Lee Harper's Little Big Band (Plays Wayne Shorter, 2005), with Igor Lunder & Zagreb Saxophone Quartet and the Flip Philipp & Ed Partyka Dectet, as well as with Bastian Stein and Philipp Gropper. From 2005 he performed (with Howard Curtis and Günther Meinhart, among others) in the ORF show Jazznacht. In 2008 he was a member of the European Jazz Orchestra of the European Broadcasting Union (with Niels Klein). From this year on he was a member of the quartet Lukas in the village around Lukas Kranzelbinder with trombonist Phil Yaeger (trombone) and drummer Christian Grobauer. In the 2010s Pukl worked with the European Movement Jazz Orchestra (EMJO Live in Coimbra), among others. In New York he recorded his album Abstract Society (Storyville Records) with Vijay Iyer, Joe Sanders and Damion Reid. In 2015 he performed as co-leader of the Daniel Nosig/Jure Pukl NYC Quintet with Tzumo Arpad (piano), Josh Ginsburg (bass) and Gregory Hutchinson at the Jazzfestival Steyr. He also recorded the album Hybrid with the pianist Matija Dedić (with Melissa Aldana, Matt Brewer, Johnathan Blake). In the field of jazz he was involved in 23 recording sessions between 2002 and 2018, most recently with the E. J. Strickland Quintet (Warriors for Peace).
