About Josep Teixidor i Barceló
Josep (José) Teixidor i Barceló was a Catalan-born composer, organist and music writer whose career is best documented through his service in Madrid’s major religious institutions. From 1774 he is securely recorded as first organist of the convent of Las Descalzas Reales, and later sources place him within the musical structures of the Real Capilla, where his work connected daily liturgical practice with the high ceremonial world of the court chapel. Alongside his music, Teixidor pursued large-scale musical scholarship: library authorities associate him with ambitious treatises including the Discurso sobre la historia universal de la música (1804) and the Tratado fundamental de la música (often catalogued as c.1804). His surviving reputation also includes instrumental and chamber repertory—especially a tradition of string quartets and keyboard works—kept alive through later editions, recordings and digitised-library transmission.
