About José Antonio Galicia

José Antonio Galicia was born in Madrid in 1949. He wrote jazz and flamenco-jazz compositions. As a percussionist, he co-starred with the greatest flamenco musicians in the final years of the previous century. He was the first to prominently incorporate the drum in flamenco music, making him one of the pioneers of the so called flamenco-fusion. Originally a jazz musician, he was a member of the 70's jazz group Dolores, with Jorge Pardo and the jazz singer Pedro Rui Blas. He had his first encounter with flamenco music while playing in the backing group for Paco de Lucía. From that moment 'El Gali ', as he was called by his colleagues, and his group played with many other great flamenco artists: Camarón de la Isla, Enrique Morente, Carmen Linares, Tomatito, and many others. Together with these artists Dolores performed various concerts, including a tour with Camarón de la Isla and Tomatito under the name "La Leyenda del Tiempo". "El Gali” also performed as a soloist with his own group, Camaleón. In addition to percussion he would also sing in this band. He was frequently supported by 'cantaores' such as Rafael Jiménez ' El Falo ', José Jiménez or Eva Durán. Of the three solo records he published, "Recuerdos de Carmen Amaya “ is considered the most ground breaking. On it Enrique Morente sings "Un pastorcito", a composition based on the works of San Juan de la Cruz. This album is opened by a Gregorian chant choir. José Antonio Galicia also composed for film, television and theatre. Since 1999 he suffered from cancer, which forced him to pull back from the world of music. He only gave concerts sporadically, when his health permitted. Including concerts with Enrique Morente, Carmen Linares and with his own group. On 2 September 2003, more than 40 musicians from the world of flamenco and jazz music paid homage to his person, this was also his farewell. He died on the 28th of September 2003 during a short holiday on Ibiza.
