About John Goldsby

John Goldsby has played bass with the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR Radio and Television) Big Band in Cologne, Germany since 1994. Originally from Louisville, he was a protagonist on the New York scene from 1980 through 1994. His recordings as leader include Space for the Bass, The Visit [Bass Lion], Live at the Nachbar [Bass Lion], Cologne [a cooperative trio with Bill Dobbins and Peter Erskine on Fuzzy Music], Viewpoint [Nagel Heyer], and Tale of the Fingers [Concord], in addition to countless recordings as a sideman. He appears on several Grammy Award-winning and Grammy-nominated recordings with artists such as Joe Lovano, Patti Austin, Acoustic Alchemy and Maceo Parker. He teaches at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Germany. His books include The Jazz Bass Book [Backbeat Books], the complete history of jazz bassists and their techniques, Jazz Bowing Techniques for the Improvising Bassist [bowed bass instruction with playalong CD — Aebersold Jazz], and Bass Notes [walking bass instruction with playalong CD — Aebersold Jazz].
