About Johan Kvandal
Johan Kvandal (1919-1999) is highly esteemed among Norway's contemporary composers. His music is annually present on the repertoire of the large orchestras in Norway. But there is an increasing interest for his music abroad; and recently Kvandal has been performed in New York, London, Tokyo, Germany and many Russian cities. Kvandal's list of works contains 85 Opus, and his compositions consist of almost all kinds of ensembles from solo instruments to large orchestra. A main work is the opera "Mysteries" Op. 75 based on the novel with the same name by Knut Hamsun. The opera is recently translated into German. Johan Kvandal also has a large production of works for solo voice and chorus. Of the larger vocal works one can mention the Ibsen-Kantata (with text based on Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen), the coloratura aria Michelangelo Poem Op. 49, and the three part choral work The Miracle Op. 69 which is translated into English. His large amount of orchestral and chamber music is Norwegian standard repertoire.
