About Joe Morgenstern

Joe Morgenstern is the film critic for The Wall Street Journal. His movie reviews appear each Friday in the "Weekend & Leisure" section of the newspaper, and he writes a column about the movie industry which appears in the paper every other Saturday. Morgenstern is based in Santa Monica, California. He joined the Journal in 1995. He was a foreign correspondent for the New York Times before becoming a theater and movie critic for the New York Herald Tribune in 1959. In 1965 he became a movie critic for Newsweek, then a columnist for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner from 1983 to 1988. Morgenstern's television scripts include The Boy in the Plastic Bubble and some episodes of Law & Order. He co-founded the National Society of Film Critics. He received a Pulitzer Prize in 2005, making him only the third film critic ever to win a Pulitzer for criticism, after Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times and Stephen Hunter of The Washington Post. Morgenstern is the former husband of actress Piper Laurie. Morgenstern is a 1953 graduate of Lehigh University.
