Jim O’Rourke (born January 18, 1969) is an American musician, composer, and producer whose work spans experimental rock, electronic music, and contemporary classical composition. He first became known in the early 1990s as a member of the Chicago-based band Gastr del Sol, contributing to their experimental and post-rock sound. O’Rourke has released a number of solo albums that explore a wide range of styles. Early works include Bad Timing (1997), a guitar-based instrumental album, and Eureka (1999), which combines elements of singer-songwriter music with experimental textures. Later albums include Insignificance (2001), featuring more conventional song structures, and The Visitor (2009), which incorporates orchestral and ambient elements. He has also released electronic and experimental recordings such as Terminal Pharmacy (1995) and Simple Songs (2015).
