About Jay Rakes Band

Bio The Jay Rakes Band Jay Rakes - Born in Hampton, Virginia, Jay began playing guitar at age 8. With the encouragement of his grandfather and uncle, Jay began picking out tunes by Three Dog Night and the Doobie Brothers. Jay reached a musical turning point when his brother introduced him to Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush and Steve Morse, legendary guitarist for the Dixie Dregs. Although he has long since developed his own driven guitar style, Jay still gets inspiration from Frank Marino and Steve Morse as well as Joe Satriani,Gary Moore and Eric Johnson. Jay draws from every imaginable style to craft his unique, instrumental compositions. His ability to create eclectic, memorable music has given him the opportunity to open for guitar greats Johnny Winter, Pat Travers,King's X & Yngwie Malmsteen. His talent has allowed him to make a living as a guitar instructor at Alpha Music in Virginia Beach,Virginia. In addition to live performances, Jay has also done session work for area studios. He is determined to make THE JAY RAKES BAND nationally known as a well-crafted, instrumental experience. Cody Thorton - Born in Norfolk,Virginia,Cody has been playing the drums since the age of 8 after finding his uncle's old Ludwig drum kit in his grandmother's garage.Although, his first interest was in playing the guitar after watching Ace Frehley,Cody felt more natural behind the drum kit and after two years of playing began taking lessons with former Jay Rakes Band drummer,Alan Felder.Cody,to this day says,"I couldn't have ever had a better drum teacher than Alan Felder,he's always had a huge influence on me since the day I met him."Cody continues to take lessons with Alan at Alpha music in Virginia Beach,Virginia along with guitar lessons from band member,Jay Rakes. Cody is only 16 years old and plays the drums well beyond his years with some pretty heavy influences such as Joe Morello,Buddy Rich,Mitch Mitchell,John Bohnam,Vinnie Colaiuta,Dave Weckl,Neil Peart, and many more of the greats. Bill Landon- Born in Norfolk, VA, Bill was introduced to the guitar at age 13 when he discovered a beat-up acoustic guitar and learned the Appetite for Destruction (Guns 'N Roses) album by ear, and he never looked back. Throughout the metal years and original/metal cover bands of his teens, he ended up at Shenandoah College and Conservatory for Music to start exploring a more Jazz-oriented appetite. There he was introduced to the likes of Frank Gambale, Scott Henderson, and Pat Metheny. During his stay, a dorm mate introduced him to Dream Theater and his life has never been the same. While completing his music studies obtaining a Music Composition degree from ODU in 1999, he took up the bass and formed the progressive metal band Frameshift with his drummer/classmate Anthony Geluso, also a Dream Theater addict. Bill started crafting his piano-style technique and drew inspiration from Canada's bass-extrordinaire Adrian Davidson. He never let his imagination succumb to technical obstacles, and that appetite that grew within him is well nourished by his addition in the Jay Rakes Band.
