About Jacobus Flori
Jacobus Flori, also Jacobus Florii (ca. 1550 in Maastricht (?) - active between 1571 and 1588) was a composer from the Franco-Flemish School of polyphonists. Jacobus is presumably the son of Francesco Flori the Elder (or Franciscus Florius ) and grew up with his father, who worked in Munich from 1557 to 1588 , where Orlando di Lasso was also appointed in 1556 . In the opening words of his preface to the collection Modulorum aliquot ... Flori introduces himself: 'Cum recte moneat proverbium 'Quam quisquis didicit artem, in hac se exerceat', visus sum facere non inconsulto si in id studium meas curas, tempus, operam & industriam conferrem, in quo ab ineunte inde usque aetate & a tenneris (ut aiuntneris) unguiculus quasi cum matris lacte enutritus essem, idque sub eo praeceptore, qui citra controversiam omnimu superiorum aetatum musicorum facile princeps haberi posset, Orlando di Lasso, musicae harmoniae apud illustrissimum Bavariae ducem praefecto & doctore'. As the proverb rightly admonishes, "Let every man practice in that art which he hath learned," I have evidently acted with good judgment whenever I have devoted my attention, time, effort, and zeal to the very art in which I ceaselessly from the beginning of my life, yea, from childhood (as they say) as I have been fed with mother's milk; and that under that teacher, who is indisputably regarded as the best of all older musicians, Orlando di Lasso, leader and master of vocal music with the illustrious Duke of Bavaria (translation and transcription of the Latin original, borrowed from Jan Willem Bonda , see Resources and References). From 1572 to 1574 he worked in 's-Hertogenbosch as a bassist in the service of the Illustre Lieve Vrouwe Broederschap . In that city he met Canon Balthasar de Bont, to whom he dedicated the collection Modulorum aliquot ... (the publication of which may have been financially supported by the canon as patron). It is also found in Stuttgart and Hechingen . Flori was also attached to the court chapel in Innsbruck for a while . In 1575 he temporarily returned to the Netherlands. in 1599A collection of 13 motets and 8 magnificats is published by him , dedicated to the Bishop of Salzburg - his employer as Kapellmeister - who, however, rejects the commission, after which Flori returns to the Netherlands again. A Munich source mentions a Jacob Flori, who receives twelve guilders for a Mass, possibly the Missa 'Deus in nomine tuo' . James also composes the masses St, st, st non pii dormir and Deus in nomine tuo .
