About Impaled Northern Moonforest

Impaled Northern Moonforest was an American black metal side project formed in 1997 by Josh Martin and Seth Putnam, both members of the grindcore band "Anal Cunt". The project was conceived as a parody and tribute to Norwegian black metal. According to accounts from the band members, the project began during an early morning recording session in 1997 when they decided to create music in the style of Norwegian black metal using limited equipment. Because they were unable to use electric instruments or a full drum kit, the recordings featured acoustic guitar and improvised percussion, including knee slapping and the use of a mattress. The band became known for its deliberately lo-fi and improvised approach. The members stated that they never rehearsed and that all songs were recorded spontaneously, including vocals, guitar, and percussion. The lyrics were minimal and often consisted of isolated references to Satanic or anti-religious themes commonly associated with black metal. Impaled Northern Moonforest reportedly performed a small number of live shows in locations including the Boston area, Rhode Island, Colorado, and Japan, although documentation of these performances is limited. The band intentionally avoided photography and visual promotion, and no widely circulated images of the group performing or recording are known to exist. The band's song titles were intentionally exaggerated and humorous, parodying conventions within black metal culture. Seth Putnam stated that the titles were created by inventing names that sounded stereotypically appropriate for the genre. One recurring invented term associated with the band was "Abazagorath", which appeared in various modified forms in song titles and related material. Only 200 copies of the band's self-titled release were initially produced, as the members believed demand for the recording would be very limited. Putnam later commented that even this quantity seemed excessive at the time. The track titles on the self-titled release differed from the original demo titles because the original cover artwork and notes had reportedly been lost. Putnam also stated that he was not a dedicated listener of black metal and was unfamiliar with much of the genre beyond early influential bands. He expressed skepticism toward many black metal groups active after the mid-1980s, often in a humorous or satirical manner consistent with the project's overall tone. The band never released a full-length studio album. Putnam commented that he could not imagine either significant audience demand for such a release or the group recording enough material to create one, although he acknowledged the possibility. One of the best-known songs by the group is "Grim and Frostbitten Moongoats of the North". Listeners can reportedly hear Putnam coughing during the recording, which he jokingly attributed to experiences in a fictional "inverted northernmost necroforest". Despite its origins as a parody project, Impaled Northern Moonforest attracted a cult following within underground metal circles, and Putnam reportedly received numerous inquiries from listeners seeking additional information about the band.
