About Herman Gauche
One word that keeps coming to mind when we listen to Herman Gauche: it is "fearless". Fearless musically, politically, lyrically... this seems to be an artist who truly expresses himself with almost nothing holding back. The issue is central to our times, the idea that an artist should create only for themselves, with no thought of others, that an artist should please and serve himself first. These are ideas about art that come up over and over from divers writers and musicians. And if you think about it, well, anything else seems kinda lame. If an artist tries to please the world, all would be lost, yes? Well, Herman Gauche seems like he sticks to his own plan. The production and the musicianship are excellent. In general there is a good bunch of music going on, like Steve Denny's acoustic guitar work on It's a Free Country. The peppy, wild tempos remind at times of an old truck that is zipping down the road quite nicely, but seems somehow a little bit rattley and dangerous, as if it might take off screaming across a beet field unbidden at any time. There is imagery in the writing, dig the southbound plane and the penguin flying through the ocean. Vivid poetry.
