About Harald Paulsen
Harald Johannes David Paulsen (born 26 August 1895 in Elmshorn, died 4 August 1954 in Hamburg) was a German stage and film actor and director. Paulsen made his stage debut in 1913 at the Hamburg Stadttheater. From 1915 to 1917 he served in the military during the First World War and performed at a front theatre in Mitau in 1917 and 1918. In 1919 he joined the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. One of his notable theatre roles was Mackie Messer in the premiere of "Die Dreigroschenoper," which took place on 31 August 1928 at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin. At that time, Paulsen was regarded as an admirer of Bertolt Brecht. After the National Socialist takeover in 1933, he publicly supported the regime and appeared at political events. He participated in several propaganda films, including "Ohm Krüger" and "Ich klage an". Contemporary accounts from colleagues described him as politically active and controversial within the profession. On 1 March 1938, Joseph Goebbels appointed Paulsen as director of the Theater am Nollendorfplatz in Berlin, which had recently been separated from the Volksbühne. The theatre focused mainly on operettas, and Paulsen also worked there as a director and performer. He led the theatre until 1945. In 1944 he was included on the Gottbegnadeten list ("God-gifted list" or "Important Artist Exempt List") of the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. Paulsen appeared in more than 20 silent films and over 90 sound films, often noted for his rapid speech delivery. Recordings of his singing performances also exist, including music from "Die Dreigroschenoper." Harald Paulsen died on 4 August 1954 at the age of 58 in the general hospital in Altona as a result of a stroke. He was buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Elmshorn. His son Uwe Paulsen (1944–2014) later worked as an actor, cabaret artist, and voice actor in Berlin. Paulsen’s written estate is held in the archive of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin.
