About Giulio de Ruvo

Giulio de Ruvo (in the 17th century – in the 18th century) was an Italian cellist and composer. Giulio de Ruvo may have been from Apulia, which could be interpreted by his family name, Ruvo di Puglia is the name of a place near Bari. His works for violoncello, written around 1700, belong to the early solo literature for the instrument. He was most likely active in Naples, as he devoted several of his compositions to the Apulian nobleman, the Duke of Bovino, who resided in Naples. In his sonatas for solo cello there are playing instructions, such as piano or amoroso. The manuscripts of his works can be found in the collection of Gustavo Adolfo Noseda, the library of the conservatory "Giuseppe Verdi" in Milan.
