Georg Christian Schemelli (c. 1676/1678/1680–1762) was a German Protestant church musician whose career led from early training at Leipzig’s Thomasschule to long service as court cantor (Hofkantor) at Zeitz. After working as a church musician in Treuenbrietzen, he took up the Zeitz post in 1727 and remained there until his retirement in 1758. His name lives on through the Musicalisches Gesang-Buch (Leipzig, 1736), a vast pietist devotional anthology of 954 sacred songs compiled for the Naumburg–Zeitz region. Only 69 items include notated music, and the volume became especially famous because Johann Sebastian Bach contributed to it—most notably through figured-bass work and (possibly) some melodies—making “Schemelli’s Gesangbuch” a small but enduring meeting-point between everyday Lutheran devotion and Bach’s musical world.
