About Gary Stites

In the late 50's through early 60's, Gary Stites recorded quite a few singles for the Carlton label. Born July 23, 1940 in Denver, Colorado, by his early 20's, Stite's had four charting records, including "Starry Eyed" and a cover version of Lloyd Price's "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" which peaked at # 47. His biggest hit, which was markedly similar to a Conway Twitty record was "Lonely For You" (hitting # 24 in the spring of 1959). In the sixties, He recorded for the Madfison label, then started his own record label, Living Legend, where he produced obscure groups like the Birdwatchers, the Gents Five and Tommy Strand and the Upper Hand, all without much success. He reportedly dropped out of the fickle music biz in the 70's and worked in horse racing field. all his Charlton sides were eventually compiled in a single LP called "Lonely for You" featuring all 30 sides.
