About Garáž
The band Garáž was founded in 1979 by bassist Ivo Pospíšil, and in the early 1980s, Tony Ducháček became its frontman. Although often categorized under the so-called New Wave, Garáž was conceptually and personally more closely connected to the Czech underground. It drew particular inspiration from the work of Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie. Milan Hlavsa, frontman of The Plastic People of the Universe, was also a member of Garáž in the 1980s. The band teetered on the edge between being permitted and banned, self-publishing two cult cassette tapes: "Garáž byla a je" (Garáž Was and Is) and "Garáž? Na tu nemáš!" (Garáž? You Can't Handle That!). They were only able to release music on standard formats, first on LP and later on CD, after 1989. In 1994, a rift occurred between Ivo Pospíšil and the rest of the band; the founder left Garáž (he continued to perform for some time under the same name with different musicians and a singer), and the remaining original members renamed themselves Tony Ducháček & Garage.
