About Frederick Charles Judd
Frederick Charles Judd (often credited as F. C. Judd) was a British electronics writer and engineer active in mid-20th-century tape, hi-fi, and electronic-sound culture. He appeared prominently in the amateur recording press as part of Amateur Tape Recording’s technical/editorial staff, and he authored early popular-technical books introducing electronic music to enthusiasts, including Electronic music and musique concrète (London: Neville Spearman, 1961) and later Electronics in music (Spearman, 1972). Later scholarship on UK electronic-music resources notes a facility connected with him (“F C Judd (Sound Recording Ltd) (1960)”), and a 1992 amateur-radio publication documents him demonstrating a working replica of Heinrich Hertz’s wireless apparatus at the University of East Anglia. A retrospective compilation, Electronics Without Tears, gathers material attributed to him as an electronic sound-maker.
