About Frances Hunter Gordon

Frances Hunter Gordon was born and brought up in the Highlands of Scotland. She was sent away (age 11) to board at Woldingham School in Surrey - The Convent of The Sacred Heart. Here at age 16 she wrote The Folk Mass. It was shortly after Pope John had decreed that the Mass should be said in English not in Latin. At that stage there was no music for the Mass in English. The Beatles were at No 1 in the charts and folk music was very popular. It seemed logical that the Mass should be set into folk music format. The Folk Mass was very popular. It was played in many churches in the UK. The record which was recorderd by EMI in 1967 was sold all over the world. The Woldingham Folk Mass was the first to use guitar in church in that way. It was the first mass to be sung in English and it was the first to break away from traditional music and embrace the new sounds emerging from the swinging 60's.
