About Fernão Gomes Correia

Fernão Gomes Correia (15th and 16th century) was a Portuguese Renaissance composer. There is very little known about his life. Along with Pedro de Escobar and Vasco Pires, he is one of the oldest Portuguese composers whose works have survived until today. He lived in Coimbra, Portugal, between 1505 and 1532, and worked as chaplain and singer at the cathedral, by then ran by Bishop D. Jorge de Almeida. Fernão Gomes Correia's style can be categorized as an archaic polyphony, when compared to works of other composers who succeeded him. During his lifetime, his work was well received. He is described by an amanuensis as "Lusitanus. Et optimus in arte". Only two of his works survived, "Hostias et preces" and "Missa Orbis factor".
