About Ex Machinae
Ex Machinae brings together elements from electronica, techno, industrial, and IDM to create sonic textures that are sometimes familiar, sometimes foreign, but always engaging. Operating under the philosophy that machines are simply a reflection and extension of the natural world and even our very soul, Ex Machinae produces synthetic soundscapes that mirror both the harshness and the beauty of the human experience. Ex Machinae began as 'Ex Machina' the solo project of Phil Petrie when ‘Meditations vol. I’ was released in 2006. This first instrumental effort was part of an ongoing exploration of the themes presented in the tarot; each piece representing its corresponding card. Adjustment, released in 2009, was the first full length album (released as Ex Machina). Upon it’s completion, Todd Bowes from DTK (bass), Mark Hallam (keyboards) and Ashwyn Beckett (guitars) joined Petrie (Vocals) to complete the band and create a live show. As of early 2011, Ashwyn and Todd have moved on to other projects. Bass and guitars are now, respectively, covered by Scott Barley and Tony III. The band changed it's name to 'Ex Machinae' and continues to gig in the NYC area.
