About Erhard Bodenschatz

Erhard Bodenschatz (* 1576 in Lichtenberg , † 1636 in United-Osterhausen) was a German pastor, cantor and composer. Bodenschatz was 1600-1603 cantor in Schulpforta and from 1608 pastor in Groß-Osterhausen/Querfurt. He composed numerous motets . His most famous work to date is the collection of motets published by him "Florilegium Portense", translated as "Schulpfortaer anthology". It contains two parts, published in Leipzig in 1618 and 1621, 365 motets by 58 composers and gives a good insight into the choir's repertoire in the 17th century in the Thuringian-Saxon countries. It is known that Bach knew and used this collection because he has as cantor for the St. Thomas Boys Choir -ordered some copies of the work.
