Electric Duck

About Electric Duck

The Electric Duck played in New Jersey clubs in the late '60s. Formerly known as the 'Glass Menagerie', the New Jersey group consisted of; John Arends, Lead Singer; Sal Luizza, Bass & Vocals; Frank Knox, Keyboard & Vocals; George Ayers, Guitar & Vocals and Stephen Marcelli, Drums. They appeared at Dodd's, Mrs. Jay's, D'Jais, Scottys Carnaby Street East, Cross Keys along with other various clubs. They had links to E Street Band and Elephant's Memory. In between appearance at the Cross Keys in Rahway, their equipment and instruments burned in a fire and they were never heard from again. It's been a long time, but the memory is there. After the fire the lead singer went on to business administration and in 1997 was hired as President CEO of a large food company based in NJ. John the lead singer, now resides in North Carolina. The original song on Avco Embassy label was "Most People get happy" with the Angel's (My boyfriend's back) sing backup. Several other songs were recorded in NY at the same time. Both Sal Luizza and Frank Knox were born in Newark, NJ. Growing up together, this was not their first time recording together. They both recorded for the Domain label at age 12 "A Fellow Needs A Girl" and an original song "Wildcat"/"Black Cat" by the Crescendos, a Sepe/Brooks Production. On the Red Bird Label as 'The Secrets', Frank Knox sang lead vocals on "Everyday" and an original song "A Smile Upside Down", produced by legendary soul producer Johnny Brantley, a Vidalia Production. Brantley had a young Jimi Hendrix as a studio musician. Frank Knox, George Ayers, Gene Connelly and Max Weinberg decided to disband their group. That is when Frank Knox met John Arends. John had an incredible rock and roll voice. John and Frank worked together in a local band for a time recording two original songs. When the band broke up after everyone paid their dues, John, Frank, George, Sal and Joe Pazsik formed the ' Glass Menagerie'. Joe Pazsik was no stranger. He had recorded years earlier with Frank and Sal on the Domain label. Joe became ill and was replaced by Steve Marcelli who brought his own style to the band. The 'Glass Menagerie' had just what it needed with John singing, George with unbelievable guitar skills, Sal on bass, Frank on Hammond B3 and Steve on drums. It became one kick-ass psych/rock band touring the local circuit. In the summer of '69, the band was playing at Mrs. Jay's (Stone Pony) when the club was raided by police because a Go-Go dancer was wearing a see-through blouse (really it was a waitress. John told her that she would look better wearing the scarf as a shirt rather then the one she was wearing). They had a rep of being a crazy band. At the end of some nights playing at Mrs. Jay's, several of the band members would jam until 5am at a little club at the corner of Bond Street and Cookman Av called the Upstage. The club has become a part of rock & roll history from the glory days of Asbury Park. Together they wrote a total of five songs, "Most People Get Happy", "Little People", "Melody Jane" which were all recorded and produced by Steve and Bill Jerome on Avco Embassy label; "People Around You" and "The Tiller" were never recorded in a studio. The band could not use the name "Glass Menagerie" because of the Tennessee Williams play, so Steve and Bill Jerome changed the name to the "Electric Duck" after coming out to see the band perform live and noticing that one of the band members had two pet ducks. The band was then known as the Electric Duck on the record label.
