About Eitan Steinberg
Eitan Steinberg, one of Israel's most prominent and active composers, graduated from the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music, and made further studies at the Chigiana Academy in Siena, Italy. He received his Ph.D. in Music Composition from the University of California at Berkeley, where he taught as a Visiting Lecturer in 1999. Among his teachers are composers Mark Kopytman, Richard Felciano, Luciano Berio, Peter Maxwell-Davies and Franco Donatoni. As a man who grew up in Israel, studied in Italy and California and then returned to live, compose and teach in Israel - his music embodies the convergence of different cultures, and is inspired by traditional and folk materials from around the world. His collaboration with his wife, vocalist Etty Ben-Zaken has yield more than twenty vocal works premiered by her in Israel and the U.S., many of them with polylingual texts, from Hebrew and Arabic to Turkish and Indonesian. Performers of his music include the Israel Philharmonic, the Jerusalem Symphony, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Boston Musica Viva, Ensemble Musica Nova, Israel Contemporary Ensemble, the Berkeley Contemporary Chamber Players, the Seattle Chamber Players, violist Kim Kashkashian (USA), Kuss Quartet (Germany) and pianist Sarah Cahill (USA). His works were recorded by the Israeli Radio and by the BBC television, and in 1999 his settings of Ladino Love Songs were released on the New Albion Records Label. In 2002, conductor Richard Pittman and ensemble Boston Musica Viva recorded "Rava Deravin" - a CD featuring six of his chamber works. Steinberg's concert pieces and collaborations with visual and stage artists were successfully performed in the Israel Festival, Jerusalem, the Jerusalem International Film Festival, the Tel-Aviv Cinematheque, the Tel-Aviv Museum of Art, the Chamber Music Festival in Upper Galilee, the international viola festival in Kronberg, Germany, the Tel-Aviv International Biennial for Contemporary Music - "Tempus Fugit", and in numerous concert series in Israel, Europe and the U.S. Eitan Steinberg is active as a conductor in contemporary works, and is a Lecturer in Music at the Haifa University Music Department.
