About Druid Chase
Druid Chase was born Audrey Laverne Hardwrick in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Her father was a Baptist preacher and she grew up singing in the church. She married James Kirby, had two children and was a housewife, when an agent heard her sing while riding in an elevator with her. Soon, as Audrey Kirby, she was performing locally, then travelling to nearby cities for gigs. In the late 50's, she moved to New York City, where she made her first recording of "Take Me In Your Garden". For a time, she worked in the resorts north of New York. Then, in 1961, she was invited to participate in an international review titled, "Schwarz / Weiss" (Black / White) at the Friedrichstadt Palast in Berlin, Germany. The review featured black and white artists from a number of countries, and was a huge success, with Audrey Kirby quickly becoming its star. The show was extended a number of times and launched what would become a substantial career for Ms Kirby, that centered around the nightclubs of West Berlin, but extended to many other European cities, and to tours around the world. In the late 60's, Ms Kirby decided to try her fortunes in Great Britain, and she moved to London, and took on the name Druid Chase. There, she made her second recording of "Take Me In Your Garden", which attracted some attention. Druid Chase was on the verge of signing with a major label, when she decided to return to Germany to tour with the Jurgen Weight combo. Ultimately, the combo broke up, Ms Chase moved to Accra, Ghana for a short time, and then returned to the United States. While she continued to perform sporadically, her interests shifted to writing. She had prepared a manuscript of children's stories and was working on an autobiography when she died in January of 1991.
