About Douglas Doherty
Douglas Doherty was born in 1956 in Port Harcourt Nigeria. His first significant musical experience was under the tropical stars at the age of seven, in what can only be described as a highly traumatic Nativity Play. At boarding school in England, even under the ministrations of a music teacher of the very old school (the Rolling Stones were apparently not musicians because they were incapable of writing their music down!), his interest in music developed, leaning away from the “Classical” music presented by his music teacher, towards composition, “Rock ‘n’ Roll” and experimental music. A return to “Classical” music and two years work with Christopher Brown on composition was followed by three years at UEA with Denis Smalley. A year's work with Music 11 at Durham University resulted in Multitudes for tape alone, the first UK piece to be entirely generated by that program. Since then he has composed many pieces of music, specialising in music for tape and instrument. His works have been performed all over the world. During this period he has worked with many eminent performers of contemporary music including Christopher Bowers-Broadbent, Roger Heaton, Philip Mead and Barrie Webb. In July 1998 he was awarded a PhD in Composition at the University of Birmingham. Recent Activities (most recent first): At present Managing Director of small electronics company specialising in the design and manufacture of specialist and customised audio equipment for the broadcast, film and music recording industry. This also involved working in 8 schools in Liverpool and a performance of his work 'Kaleidoscope' by 300 children in the new dock area Founded Electric Music, an international festival of contemporary and electronic music that took place in the Newcastle Playhouse. This ran successfully for three years. Directed series of concerts and workshop events in Laing and Hatton Galleries entitled "Sight and Sound". It also involved a number of projects in schools that were part of work for an Arts Council of Great Britain Bursary designed to introduce young children to contemporary and electronic music. Founded Newcastle New Music to promote a series of concerts of contemporary music.
