About Domingo Ottati

Domingo Ottati was born on the 21 February 1987 in Milan, Italy and is now living in Florence, Italy. His distinctive French-R and Tuscan heritage are the main features that allow his voice to stand out in the crowded Italian Indie scene. Ottati's passion for music was unprecedented in the first 10 years of his life. He grew a passion for learning rare and exotic instruments, studying and obtaining proficiency with Orchestra Bass, Ocarina and Orchestra Harp, ignoring more common instruments such as the piano, guitar and flutes. Unfortunately these instrument's didn't give the artist the broadness of genres that he was looking for, making him fall into a 7 year long creative crisis. In summer 2005 the turning point of his career comes when he meets Nicola Bianchi, who teaches him how to compose using a guitar and introduces him to Italian alternative guru, expert in computerized musical synthesis, Nedo Bargini. Ottati is deeply influenced by these characters, and goes as far as to write a song titled "Nedo Bargini" honouring his mentor. After very little time Ottati becomes a prolific songwriter, producing his first EP "Divanoletto" at the beginning of 2007. The tracks in the record represent many different musical genres, but the lo-fi recording they have in common is the distinctive element of the tunes. His early sound is influenced by artists such as Beck, Elvis Costello, Devo and Italian acts Verdena, Bugo and Alberto Camerini. As he develops his own style he falls into deeper use of computer-generated sounds and borrows sounds from British Alternative Indie bands and experiments with Drum'n'Bass-like tunes. Ottati has a deep sense of belonging to the Italian breed of singer-songwriters, giving a great importance to his lyrics and emphasizing the social theme of many of his compositions. His tunes tell the tales of his life, his friends, his views on modern Italian society, of which he is often quite critical. Many of his stories are borrowed form his experience as a student, musician and highly successful card player. Even though his lyrics are often ironic, almost hilarious, some of his songs are deep reflections on modern society. This is the nature of his first single "La Canzone del Rastone Infelice", in which he tells the touching story of a disillusioned "punkabbestia" who dreams of escaping stereotypes and starting over with a radically different life-style. Domingo Ottati is the vocalist, plays and produces all the sounds in his tunes, and isn't looking into offering live performances in the near future. This isn't preventing him from working hard on the production of his first full length record, which will be titled "Make Love, not Rasta" and is due to be published in the first half of 2008.
