About Deadfront
“Deadfront: Anything but Dead.” A nu-metal band based in Des Moines, active from 1997–1999 and again from 2013–2015. The band frequently performed throughout the Midwest alongside acts such as American Head Charge, Smakdab, Painface, and Heroic Dose. The group went through several lineup changes during its existence. The original lineup featured Max Hudson (ex-Heroic Dose) on vocals, Aaron Peltz (ex-Shedd, ex-Downthesun, ex-On a Pale Horse, ex-Dogs of Neptune, etc.) on guitar, and Dan Spain (ex-Atomic Opera, ex-Downthesun, ex-Dogs of Neptune, etc.) on drums. Tim Flor (ex-Painface/ex-PygWalk) was in the band at some point in 1997 but was later replaced by Root. Shortly afterward, the band decided to reorganize, with Peltz moving to vocals and Hudson switching to guitar. Deadfront then recruited two new members: bassist Shawn Economaki and guitarist Jim Root, both formerly of Stone Sour, which had disbanded the previous August of 1997. Deadfront quickly became a notable act within the local DSM scene, performing at several small yet influential festivals in the area. In September 1998, Hudson departed the band and was replaced by Bruce Swink (ex-Atomic Opera, ex-Modifidious, ex-Downthesun, etc.) who was then with Spore — a.k.a. the pre-Heroic Dose band. In January 1999, Root was recruited by Slipknot, performing his final show with Deadfront on January 30 before officially leaving the group. Economaki soon followed, later working as a roadie for Slipknot. The band temporarily ceased performing, leading many to believe they had disbanded. However, Deadfront returned in July 1999 with a revised lineup featuring DJ Phase II, Wade Thompson on bass, and Matt Sepanic on guitar. Although the band experienced renewed local success, Deadfront ultimately dissolved in late 1999 for unknown reasons. Years later, in 2013, the band reunited with former Slipknot guitarist Josh Brainard joining the lineup. The reunion-era lineup closely resembled the October 1998 formation, though without Root. Unlike the band’s later 1999 incarnation, no DJ was included, marking a return to their earlier sound. Deadfront performed several shows at local Iowa clubs and reportedly planned to release new material; however, the band eventually disbanded once again for undisclosed reasons.
