About David Murray Trio

David Murray Trio is a jazz trio led by American saxophonist David Murray. The trio has, at various times, comprised (in addition to Murray): Fred Hopkins, Phillip Wilson; Fred Hopkins, Stanley Crouch; Johnny Mbizo Dyani, Andrew Cyrille; Fred Hopkins, Steve McCall; Richard Davis, Joe Chambers; Murray was born in Oakland, California, USA. He was initially influenced by free jazz musicians such as Albert Ayler and Archie Shepp. He gradually evolved a more diverse style in his playing and compositions. Murray set himself apart from most tenor players of his generation by not taking John Coltrane as his model, choosing instead to incorporate elements of mainstream players Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and Paul Gonsalves into his mature style. Released following albums as a trio: Low Class Conspiracy (Adelphi, 1976) Live at Peace Church (Danola, 1976) 3D Family (Hat Hut, 1978) Sweet Lovely (Black Saint, 1980) The Hill (Black Saint, 1986) Acoustic Octfunk (Sound Hills, 1993)
