About Darrick Thompson

Darrick Thompson’s music combines pop, folk, and blues themes, accented with a uniquely original sound and style. In a live setting he performs both as a solo musician as well as with his band, depending on the situation. Thompson’s career began in early 2007 after a life-changing journey to Catanduva, Brazil where he wrote a majority of his debut album I Was An Aeroplane. While in Brazil, Thompson spent extensive time traveling about the country and educating himself as a musician and more so as a person. With a student’s budget Thompson recorded and independently released his album in June of 2009 with the help of Carterco Recording, and the artwork and design of Ezra Clayton Daniels. Six months after completing I Was An Aeroplane in Chicago, Thompson was given a recording opportunity in Rome, Italy where he subsequently spent four months recording and touring through Italy, Portugal, Spain, and England. Travel and adventure have yielded loads of new material, so in the meantime, you’ll find Darrick Thompson in the pre-production phase of his second full-length album. Born and raised Spokane, Washington, Darrick Thompson has since made Chicago home. The amazing history, people and resources of this beautiful city are the perfect incubator for Thompson's musical aspirations. Inspired by Washington, penned in Brazil, and recorded in Chicago, Darrick Thompson’s debut is thick with the yearning of travel. Marked by Thompson’s dexterous picking and polished gravel voice, I Was An Aeroplane finds a songwriter exploring transition and adaptation with the easy candor of a seasoned storyteller.
