About Dark Morning
Dark Morning started while guitarist/singer (Ryan Kaminski) and drummer (Brad Stroka) were juniors in high school. Soon after they found bassist Jenna Willis and started writing songs. They auditioned for the school Battle of the Bands and failed hard. The following year they tried again, and failed again. Somewhere along the road Jenna parted ways to start playing with a new band and Dark Morning picked up bassist Adam Batt. In December of 2003 they recorded and released a short 3-song demo called "Sketches of Dawn". It was their senior year of high school. They auditioned yet again for the Battle of the Bands. They were accepted. They won that shit and scored themselves 5 hours in at a bitchin' studio: Select Sound (Buffalo, NY). It was enough to record the song "Glow" (which is conveniently posted on this page). From there the band began to book more shows around Buffalo and play a bit more regularly. The shows were never played to sell-out crowds but they had some fun along the way. They acquired a few die-hard groupies and fell in love with a little venue out in Alden, NY called BILLIEBOB'S. It was a pool hall turned rock venue and it was a safe haven for little local bands. One summer at BILLIEBOB'S Dark Morning organized a massive all day rock show with ten area bands. They also had a great opportunity to open for Gym Class Heroes at Club Infinity (Williamsville, NY) after winning a Battle of the Bands there. Eventually the guys graduated high school and went off to college. They made an effort to keep on playing but with each member at a different college, practice time was scarce, and traveling back and forth wasn't practical. However, despite the challenge of the distance the guys managed to win the Battle of the Bands at Brad's college in Rochester (RIT) which placed them on the bill for RIT's Springfest. In the spring of 2006, Dark Morning began work on their first full-length cd. They recorded the first half of the CD at SUNY Fredonia with a senior sound recording student. The plan was to continue recording in Buffalo and release the album mid-summer. However, there were difficulties at the end of the Fredonia recording process, to the point that the four songs that were recorded were almost completely lost forever. Fortunately that was not the case, and the project was able to continue, but the release date was pushed back several months beyond what they band had hoped for. But the band just kept moving forward and scheduled recording time at a small studio in Buffalo called Blizzard Sounds. Things seemed to turn around as soon as they arrived. Four more songs were recorded with engineer Gerald Thomas at the controls and the band was excited about the quality that he was able to produce. By the end of summer the band had eight tracks recorded and mixed. In order to fill the record out, they added the original "Glow" recording and a home recording of "Let It Rain" which Ryan recorded and mixed on his own. Artwork was designed and the final shrink-wrapped cds were ordered. After what had seemed like a lifetime, the Dark Morning debut full-length CD was complete. It was released to the public on... uh oh, more bad news... October 13th, 2006. The day of the October Storm. Son of a bitch!!! Well, nevertheless, the band was still able to sell a few CDs here and there. From there, the band played one more show and then seemed to fall off the face of the earth. Schedules got tight, Ryan student taught, Brad co-op(ed), Adam studied abroad in Germany, and finally bachelor's degrees were granted. It was a time of all work... and no play. And no rock. Amps collected dust. Strings went out of tune. Drum sticks remained unbroken. Cymbals hung in silence. And this continued...until the summer of 2009. The Summer of 2009 was a great rebirth of Dark Morning. The boys were all living together again, back in good ol' Lancaster, NY. They descended the stairs to Brad's basement once more with one purpose... to rock. And did they rock. In what seemed like a matter of minutes, they revamped old songs and managed to crank out four new songs. They also took on a brand new challenge of learning cover songs. They worked hard to pull things back together after such a long break and the hard work payed off. They played an exciting 'welcome back' show at Club Diablo (Buffalo, NY) on September 5th, 2009 at which they debuted the four new songs: "Circles of Trust", "Gentlemen", "Leech", and "Voices" and two cover songs: "Animal I Have Become" (Three Days Grace) and "Exo-Politics" (Muse). They were thrilled to see that some of the die-hard groupies from the early years still remained loyal and came out to support the trio. Since then, the band has tried to maintain a regular rehearsal time to continue writing songs and learning covers, and are also considering a name-change. They hope to continue booking shows as their schedules allow. One exciting announcement is that Brad got married December 12th, 2009. Luckily the wife still gives him permission to rock. As for the other guys... Adam is currently working full time at Buffalo Express Courier and Ryan is currently working full time as a chorus teacher at The Elmwood Franklin School (Buffalo, NY) and Clarence High School (Clarence, NY). They continue to look for ways to balance out their daily lives with a healthy dose of rock and roll.
