About Cristina Georgina

Almudena López disguises as Cristina Georgina, in the shape of a romantic heroine. Key singer of Las Escarlatinas and Mate, Almudena is besides a prominent flute player, a reputed architect and a talented designer/ illustrator. She is undoubtedly someone with something genuine and personal to say. More importantly this timid Audrey Hepburn-delicate chanteuse is willing to redefine herself as one of the most beautiful singing voices in indiepop. Let's hope she can remain under the radar for a long time. “Mapa mundi” is her first solo album but it has all the necessary components for eternal alchemy and a sonic palette of pop numbers that make you think of Isobel Campbell/Gentle Waves, La Buena Vida, Beatles, Coralie Clement, Nico, Mate, Escarlatinas, Go- Betweens, Ephemera or Kiki D’aki. In few words, pure pop music under the usual blue-blooded production of Ramón Leal and Mateo Guiscafré. Cristina’s voice is marvelous, her harmonies warm, and her approach devoid of crass commercialism. You will find no studio tricks here, just the best levels of pop polish, dizzying heights of charm and a reliance on good songwriting and tunes. In this eccentric and evocative guitar pop, you will discover something pure, peaceful and delicately quaint too. Like an old kitchen table draped with a red and white tablecloth sitting in a room with bright turquoise walls. Alberto Matesanz (Mate, Plastic D'amour), Miguel Ángel Villanueva (Los Brujos), Fernando Márquez El Zurdo (La Mode), Sergio López de Haro (Kiki D'aki), Violeta Gómez, Charlie Misterio (Los Caramelos) and Pablo Jiménez (Pulpops, Soberanos) are reputed songwriters with the precise recipe for harmonizing stories of angst and misery and for placing awkward characters in pastoral and urban tales and philosophical renderings. Both musicians and songwriters have been very sensitive to her style and blend seamlessly in a timeless yet thoroughly modern record. There is also guitar jangling (dreamy guitar textures and playful romps) influenced from many different leanings: The Smiths, The Would-be-goods, Love, Trash Can Sinatras, Field Mice and La Buena Vida/ Le Mans into a unique and refreshing approach that stands at odds with most contemporary music. Sometimes joyous and sparkling, Cristina takes you on a leisurely stroll where the sun is shining and everything is alright. In this facet, the songs draw on themes of travel, exploration, and the desire for an isolated niche amid the pressures of big city living. However there are also moments of transcendence (naïve baroque pop?) and vignettes of romance novels about love and betrayal on the high seas and ancient lands. In short, decadent dreams to hitch on for a ride into a world of escapism, perhaps even isolationism. Mapa mundi is definitely a place where to go and seek shelter. And certainly as good and comforting as other historic pop records:, Deseo Carnal, Cecilia 2, Popemas, Sol de Medianoche, Heliotropo ,Soidemersol… Spanish pop at its best!
