About Cripple Mr Onion
The name Cripple Mr Onion comes from a fictional card game (rules for the game were subsequently developed by fans of the author) mentioned in a series of books by UK author Terry Pratchett, who gave Cripple permission to use the name. The origins of Cripple Mr Onion go all the way back to Dunedin in the late twentieth century, where Mike 'Fud' Fudakowski and Andy Woodd were both music students at the University of Otago. Andy recalls meeting Fud: "I had only moved to Dunedin a day or so previously, and I was checking out all the music stores when I walked into this particular shop on the main street and saw this guy pull a five-string bass down off the wall and start slapping it. I'd never seen someone slap like that before (this was a while ago...), I was too freaked out to talk to this guy". "Later on I discovered that Fud was in a lot of my classes, and after about a year of jamming we managed to get a band together. Umlaut, the eclectic metal band which resulted only lasted for a year or two, but it was heaps of fun and I still really like the songs. I guess it really laid the foundations for what was to come..." Fud moved to Christchurch in 1996 to study at Jazz school, and when Andy finished University a year later he also followed Fud to Christchurch to start another band, teaming up with John 'Hooves' Clayton (drums) and Jeremy James Brown (keyboards)... and so, in 1996, Cripple Mr Onion was formed. Cripple had only played a few gigs around town when in 1999 John and Jeremy left the band for contracts playing covers overseas, and the remaining members found themselves searching for a new drummer. René joined the band in July 2000 and for while the Cripple lineup was complete, allowing the band to bring a new solidity to both their musical direction and to their sound. Near the end of 2001 Cripple sought to expand their sonic capabilities even further and enlisted the talents of Aaron Burns as an additional guitarist. When they're not playing with the band, René also lends his talents to the field of tattoo artistry, Fud teaches bass guitar to over one hundred secondary school students, Aaron is currently doing a Media Studies course and Andy works as a software engineer. Each member of the band has been playing their instrument for over twelve years; this lengthy experience as writers and performers of their own original music lends a quality to their music that is appreciated by audiences with a wide variety of tastes and backgrounds. Following the sudden departure of bassist Fud in March 2004 the band took a break to search for a new member. Finally, after 5 months of unsuccessful auditions a staff member from local music shop discovered new bassist Shoki Kamishima playing the bassline from 'Six Days Of Silence' in the back of the store and suggested he contact the band for an audition. Four months later Cripple took to the stage with a vengeance and a revitalised sound, with some new material in addition to all their favourite existing songs. Band Members: Shoki Kamishima (bass) Aaron Burns (guitar) René Harvey (drums) Andy Woodd (guitar, vocals)
