About Coral Sant Jordi

Coral Sant Jordi was started 60 years ago, in 1947, by a group of friends encouraged by the well-known figure of Oriol Martorell, who worked as conductor from the beginning and headed not only a unique way of interpreting and performing music, but also a certain social projection of music in connection with and committed to the history of Catalonia. Oriol Martorell’s contribution to Coral Sant Jordi has been of great importance, as he was the spirit and driving force behind a modern choir, a concept that can be understood from his own words: “[…] We’ve wanted to sing everything, from medieval Gregorian melodies to jazz, as well as the greatest composers of all times.” With its spirit of variety and its commitment to Catalonian music, Coral Sant Jordi has a long track record in the diffusion of music, with 1,700 performances in Catalonia, Spain and other countries in Europe. It has also collaborated with renowned composers and conductors such as Sergiu Celibidache, Eduard Toldrà, Scherchen, Duke Ellington, Antoni Ros Marbà, Michael Corboz, Sergiu Comissiona, Edmon Colomer, Laszlo Heltay, Laurence Foster and Lluís Llach. Since 2000, the role of choirmaster has been taken up by Lluís Vila i Casañas.
