About CooEE

Cooee is Australian duo Kirli Saunders and Mark Chester Harding. The duo began serendipitously, after Saunders and Harding met performing with Jack River for triple j’s Like a Version in late 2023. That same week, Saunders released her poetry collection, Returning (Magabala) — a book that would linger with Harding and form the lyrical foundation of their early songwriting sessions. A handful of Saunders' poems were soon set to Harding’s pre-existing musical sketches, marking the start of Cooee. Their first single, ‘Sacred Women’s Ways’, is a reverent tribute to matriarchal strength, rooted in Kirli’s poem of the same name. Grounded in themes of cultural continuity and feminine sovereignty, the song features the Shoalhaven-based First Nations women’s choir Mudjingaal Yangamba and drums by Harry Day of Middle Kids. Kirli, a proud Gunai woman and recipient of the Order of Australia Medal for her contributions to the arts, brings a literary sensibility to the project. Mark is a producer/songwriter known for his work with Jack River, Jem Cassar Daley, and Little May.
