About Coltrane, John & Johnny Hartman

John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman is a studio album released by Impulse! Records in mid-1963 (A-40). It remains the only recording on which Coltrane featured a vocalist as leader, and it was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013. Although Coltrane and Hartman are sometimes said to have known each other from Dizzy Gillespie’s band in the late 1940s, their tenures did not overlap. They may have shared a bill at the Apollo Theater in 1950. When producer Bob Thiele first proposed the collaboration, Hartman was uncertain, questioning whether his style would suit Coltrane’s. After hearing Coltrane perform at Birdland, however, Hartman agreed. The repertoire was largely chosen in advance, with ‘Lush Life’ added after the singers heard Nat King Cole’s version on the radio en route to the studio. Recording and music The album was recorded on March 7, 1963, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. According to Johnny Hartman, most of the songs were completed in a single take. The only exception was ‘You Are Too Beautiful’, which required a second attempt after drummer Elvin Jones dropped a drumstick during the initial take. Jazz writer Michael Cuscuna explains (CD reissue booklet) the speculation of two different versions of the album: “At a later date, Coltrane decided to overdub some additional obbligato saxophone phrases behind Hartman's vocals on ‘My One and Only Love’, ‘Lush Life’ and ‘You Are Too Beautiful’. A new master was made by Rudy Van Gelder, who added some additional echo to the three tracks. Although the first release of the album used the original master without Coltrane's additional obbligatos, it was later substituted with the new master.” Personnel: Johnny Hartman – vocalsJohn Coltrane – tenor saxophone Jimmy Garrison – double bass Elvin Jones – drums McCoy Tyner – piano
