About Civil Defiance

Civil Defiance is an American rock band formed in 1989 in Los Angeles, California. Founded by Gerry Nestler, Mike Kinney, Jenk Kent, and Mike Kent, the band is known for its unique approach, blending various genres to defy conventional expectations in the rock and metal scenes. The lyrics are penned by Brad Hornbacher, adding a distinct narrative layer to their music. Initially inspired by late-1980s thrash and speed metal, Civil Defiance expanded their style to include elements from jazz, ethnic music, and psychedelia, alongside grindcore influences. This experimental approach was showcased on their 1991 EP Abstract Reaction, a limited-release CD that garnered attention both locally and internationally, especially in Germany. The band's growing reputation attracted interest from major record labels, but a deal never materialised due to the rise of grunge and internal industry politics. Instead, Civil Defiance self-financed their debut album The Fishers For Souls, which they released independently in 1996 through their own Blood Orange label. Despite these challenges, the album was well-received, particularly in Germany, where it secured positive reviews from magazines like Rock Hard and Heavy, Oder Was!?, leading to a licensing deal with Dream Circle Records. In 1997, Civil Defiance embarked on their first European tour in support of Psychotic Waltz, now featuring Gerry Nestler, original drummer Gabe Trevizo, guitarist John Lisi, and bassist Juan Perez. The band performed for enthusiastic crowds across Europe, gaining new fans and acclaim. Rock Hard's Michael Rensen described their sound as "an ideal blend of Zappa, Soundgarden, and Strapping Young Lad," highlighting the band's potential for significant success. However, upon returning home, the band faced challenges, including the inability to find a suitable replacement for Trevizo and a lack of label support. As a result, Nestler and Perez shifted their focus to a new project called Philm, collaborating with Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. Civil Defiance became active once again when Nuclear Blast A&R representative Andy Siry, a longtime supporter of the band, signed them to his new label Grind Syndicate Media. The result was the album Circus Of Fear, which features four tracks from the earlier Abstract Reaction EP. This album showcases the band's diverse musical style, blending a variety of genres and demonstrating their mastery of dynamics. The band adeptly combines influences ranging from thrash and 1970s psychedelia to Mediterranean folk and progressive rock, culminating in the orchestral piece Man In The Moon, which features violinist Lili Hadyn. The band's ethos remains encapsulated in their mantra, "Expect the unexpected," as Gerry Nestler and lyricist Brad Hornbacher continue to evolve Civil Defiance into the 21st century. Despite changes in the lineup, the band's commitment to artistic defiance over commercial compliance endures.
