The Grand Necropolitan Sextet is Cathal Coughlan's latest great musical experiment subsequent to Microdisney, the Fatima Mansions and a several solo albums. Its sound is an eclectic mix of classical and modern strongly reminiscent of Scott Walker at his very best. The group's first work, Foburg, is an hallucinatory vision of a dystopian society as perceived by a fractured mind. The lyrics are by turns hauntingly beautiful and ironically banal. Foburg was commissioned by Coughlan's native Cork for its European City of Culture celebrations and performed there in September 2005.
