Brother North

About Brother North

Brother North is a duo based in the City of Umeå in northern Sweden. The band was formed in 2012 by childhood friends Freyr Flodgren and Lucas Enquist, both 20 years old at the time. By then they had been making music together since they joined Umeå Music Classes at the tender age of 12, usually in a traditional "lead singer-guitar-base-drums-keybord" combo. However, after 8 years of struggling to keep a band together, Freyr and Lucas decided to go on alone. The band released a first single in December 2013, and a full album on the 28 April 2014. There was an immediate positive response from the audience on Soundcloud, particularly for first track "Skyward Lights". Critics were more impressed by the album as a whole, urging their readers to listen beyond the first track, such as Per Berglund on ´Meadowmusic´ (Sweden), Egill Harðar editor of online magazine ´Rjominn´ (Iceland), and Nitesh Gupta musical editor on Altwood Magazine (US). The music fits across various genres such as Folk/Pop/Indie/Alternative. Freyr and Lucas list among their influences Mumford and Sons, Bon Iver, Sigur Rós, Cinematic Orchestra. The main characteristics of their music is the harmonious interplay between Freyr's and Lucas' acoustic guitars, overlaid with layers of string and brass, as well as the occasional electrical guitar and piano. Freyr's voice deserves special mention. It is silky smooth and emotionally expressive, but with phenomenal range.
