About Brògeal

Brògeal are a five-piece folk-punk band from Falkirk, Scotland, blending Celtic storytelling, punk energy, and indie swagger. Their sound combines banjo, accordion, mandolin, and guitar with raw vocals and driving rhythm. The result is music that feels equal parts rowdy pub session and heartfelt protest song, rooted in tradition but made for today. Formed “out of the ashes of high-school bands,” the lineup includes Daniel Harkins (vocals/guitar), Aidan Callaghan (banjo), Sam MacMillain (accordion), Euan Mundie (bass), and Luke Mortimer (drums). Their music channels the spirit of The Pogues and The Dubliners while giving Scottish folk a modern twist. The name Brògeal comes from an old Scottish tale about wandering mercenaries who travelled from town to town, working, fighting, and playing music to survive. It reflects the band’s restless, community-driven spirit. Their debut EP, Dirt & Daydreams, introduced their raucous, heartfelt take on Scottish folk and earned critical acclaim. HIVE Magazine praised it for its “confidence and warmth” and called it “a stunning statement of intent.” The self-titled second EP, Brògeal, showcased the band’s growth and included a reimagined version of the traditional song “Roving Falkirk Bairn”. Critics noted its skillful balance of humour, melody, and heart. HIVE Magazine said it showed “a level of talent and class that it would take a lesser band their whole career to come close to,” while No Frills Reviews described the tracks as “intensely local and timeless.” Brògeal have earned a reputation for high-energy live performances. Discovery Music Scotland called their shows “blistering, infectious, and full of joy,” while Brighton & Hove News praised them as “jam-packed full of folk, indie, and Irish-punk energy.” In 2025, the band released the single “Tuesday Paper Club” described by Traveller’s Tunes as “an indie folk-punk riot, Christy Moore fronting The Pogues”. Their debut full-length album, Tuesday Paper Club, promises to capture the full range of their sound, blending humour, heart, and rebellion. Fiercely Scottish, communal, and impossible to stand still to, Brògeal are a rising force in modern folk-punk, uniting generations through music that feels both timeless and urgent.
