About Boenox
BOENOX - The story... Boenox originated in 1996 at Kasterlee at an orchestra session of the conservatories of Antwerp, Maastricht and Tilburg where they first met each other and immediately wanted to play as an ensemble. Although Katelijn only joined Boenox in 1997 with the recording of their first Demo, she was also at this orchestra session. Originally they only played music especially written for their bizarre composition i.e. Oboe, Bassoon, Cello and Bass. The Flemish composers who took the challenge of writing for them were surprised that this combination of double reeds and low string instruments could work: it had never been done before in the whole history of classical music... a "new" sound was born! They stopped playing only sheet music when the members joined forces to write their own music. The influences of each individual are clearly audible, yet they never stand in the way of the overall sound of the group and never pushes them in a direction nor style but their own. The past two years they played at the international acclaimed Festival of Flanders as well as at Clubs, like the Ancienne Belgique where they played together with the American band Low, halls like Le Lieu Unique at the Aller et Retour festival of Nantes (Fr.) and even open-air Festivals like Pukkelpop and the Oerol festival on the isle of Ter Schelling (Nl.). Boenox has released two CD's sofar. The second one also features some video material. For more info, please read our "CD's" section. About the name : Since many people ask us where we got the name of the quartet we decided to let the cat out of the bag: by playing scrabble… in a strange way. When you take the first O out of Oboe and then you say Knox (like the Fort) then you know how to pronounce Boenox.
