About Bo Ya

Bo Ya (伯牙) was a legendary guqin master who is said to have lived in the State of Chu during China’s Spring and Autumn period (c. 6th century BCE). Though details of his life are shrouded in myth, he is credited—via early texts like the Lüshi Chunqiu—with composing seminal qin pieces such as Shuixiancao (水仙操) and the suite Gao Shan Liu Shui (“High Mountains and Flowing Water”), works that evoke the grandeur of Mount Tai and the sweep of great rivers. His friendship with the woodcutter Zhong Ziqi (锺子期) embodies the idea of 知音 (zhīyīn, “one who truly knows another’s music”). According to legend, once Ziqi died, Bo Ya smashed his guqin in sorrow, believing no one else could grasp the spirit of his compositions—thus ending the lineage of his personal performances. Despite its origins in oral tradition, the surviving Ming‑dynasty tablature of High Mountains and Flowing Water ensures Bo Ya’s vision continues to resonate in modern guqin practice.
