About Bernardo Peralta Escudero
Bernardo [de] Peralta Escudero (Falces, Navarre, c. 1575 — Burgos, November 4, 1617) was a Spanish composer and maestro de capilla. In 1605 he was a chapel master in Alfaro. In 1607 he presented himself for the position of chapel master in the cathedral of the Burgo de Osma, for which he was rejected for not passing the Limpieza de sangre reports proving no recent non-Christian ancestry. Subsequently, he obtained the position of chapel master in the cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. He was called as a chapel master of the cathedral of Burgos in 1609, after the departure of his predecessor, Diego Bruceña.6 During his time in Burgos, the installation of a grandiose organ in the cathedral was discussed. Indeed, Juan de Argüete made the organ on the side of the Epistle in 1636, which was gilded and stewed by the painter Juan Delgado in 1645. In Burgos he managed to be named a canon, but without the right to vote. Peralta would stay in Burgos until his death, despite some offers to travel: in 1616 he was offered the position of chapel master in the Royal Chapel of Madrid, commenting in the latter case "I prefer galleys to Madrid." On December 9, 1611 it was confirmed in the minutes that the oppositions of chapel master of the cathedral of Zaragoza had won, after the death of the titular, Francisco de Silos. In January 1612 there was news of Peralta through the council of Burgos, excusing the teacher's absence. Although there are authors who claim otherwise,9 there is no evidence that Peralta came to take office in the Seo. The minutes of the cathedral of Burgos continue to give Peralta as its chapel master until October 9, 1617, when he is absent from the city, to die shortly after. Peralta's compositions are part of contemporary polycoreal works, of the cheerful type preferred by Philip III. A few works are preserved, including a mass of the deceased, a magnificat and some Christmas carols. Most of his work is preserved in the cathedral of Zaragoza. Its fame spread to the New World and the cathedral of Puebla preserves a magnificent of Peralta. It is also known that it was represented in the missing library of John IV of Portugal.
