About Benh Zeitlin
Benh Zeitlin (born October 14, 1982) is an American filmmaker, composer, and animator. Zeitlin was raised in Queens, New York City. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. His parents are Amanda Dargan and Steve Zeitlin, folklorists of City Lore in New York City. Zeitlin is of Jewish descent on his father's side. Zeitlin's mother is from Darlington, South Carolina. In 2004, he cofounded the Court 13 independent filmmaking collective, named after a Wesleyan University squash court that Benh and his friends would use as a filming site. He moved to New Orleans while making his first short film, Glory at Sea, in 2008. In 2012, his first feature, Beasts of the Southern Wild, won the Caméra d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival and The Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic at the Sundance Film Festival.
