Bartolomé de Olagüe

About Bartolomé de Olagüe

Bartolomé de Olagüe, also known as Olaegui and Olagué, (died Santiago de Compostela, February 1658) was a Spanish composer and maestro de capilla. There is very little known about Olagüe. Not even his name is safe. Baltasar Saldoni calls him Olaegui: and Barton Hudson as Olagué. Its origin is uncertain, giving Hudson a possible Basque origin based on the surname, although it also mentions a possible Portuguese origin. It seems that he was educated as a singing child in Burgos and went through several minor churches. There is news of Olagüe as a chapel master of the Church of Santa María de Viana, in Navarra, in 1620. Bartolomé Olagüe, chapel master, ziento zinquenta reales, were spared for the letters, billiards, salads, and motets, masses and salbes that he composed for the solemnity and festivals, [...] Parish Archive of Viana Book of the Factory of Santa María, 1620 It is known with certainty that he was appointed chapel master of the Cathedral of Burgos on June 20, 1644.2 After Diego de Pontac's departure in October 1647 from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the position of chapel master was vacant. Olagüe was appointed to the Compostela teacher in March 1651.2 He remained in the post until his death in Santiago in 1658, being replaced by Martín Serrano in office.5
