About Antonio Archilei

Antonio Archilei' di S Fiore or more simply Antonio Archilei (born on 12th of March 1543 at Albano - died on 1st of January, 1612 in Florenc ) was an Italian singer, composer and lutenist of the second half of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. In 1589 , Antonio Archilei is, with Luca Marenzio , Cristofano Malvezzi , Giulio Caccini , Jacopo Peri , Emilio de' Cavalieri and Giovanni di Bardi , one of the composers of the musical Interludes of " La Pellegrina ", comedy by Girolamo Bargagli , created for the celebrations given in Florence on the occasion of the marriage of the Grand Duke Ferdinand I of Medici and Christine of Lorraine . These interludes are of great historical interest because, with the adoption of the style of concertante music, they are considered the most direct "ancestors" of opera . It was an opportunity for Antonio Archilei to give his most famous work: Dalle più alte sfere , still performed today. In the last years of the 16th century , when famous singers and singers performed more frequently before private assemblies than in public performances, madrigals arranged as solos in a lyrical work gave them the opportunity to emphasize the qualities of their voice. The singing of one-voice madrigals had become a very popular genre in which famous prima donnas such as Vittoria Archilei or eminent tenors such as Jacopo Peri excelled . The German musicologist Raphael Georg Kiesewetter ( 1773 - 1850 ) points out, for example, that the madrigal Dalle più alte sfere , composed by Antonio Archilei in 1589 as an interlude to " La Pellegrina ", underwent such an adaptation and was sung solo by his wife Victoria. The elements of the composition had been transferred, seemingly without difficulty, from the voice to the instruments. Ms. Archilei played the lute while her husband and Antonio Nalda both played the chitarroni . Antonio Archilei married in 1582 the famous singer Vittoria Concarini and was the father of Ferdinando Archilei .
