Anna Jantar-Kukulska (born June 10, 1950, in Poznań, Poland – died March 14, 1980, in Warsaw, Poland) was a beloved Polish singer and one of the most popular voices of the 1970s in Poland. Known for her charismatic stage presence and heartfelt pop songs, she left a lasting legacy in the Polish music scene. She was also the mother of the well-known singer Natalia Kukulska. Anna Jantar’s career took off in 1973 when she debuted at the prestigious Polish Song Festival in Opole with her performance of "Najtrudniejszy pierwszy krok" (The Hardest First Step), a song that became a major hit and marked the beginning of her rapid rise to fame and she soon became a fixture on Polish radio and television. Throughout her career, Anna Jantar collaborated closely with her husband, composer Jarosław Kukulski, who wrote many of her most memorable songs. Together, they created a series of chart-topping hits, including "Tyle słońca w całym mieście" (So Much Sun in the Whole City), "Staruszek świat" (Old Man World), "Radość Najpiękniejszych Lat" (The Wonderful Years) and "Nic nie może wiecznie trwać" (Nothing Can Last Forever), all of which remain beloved classics in Poland. Jantar’s music blended elements of pop, folk, and rock, and she was known for her ability to convey deep emotion through her voice, making her songs timeless in Polish popular culture. She often performed at major music festivals and enjoyed wide recognition across the country. Tragically, her life and career were cut short on March 14, 1980, when she died in the LOT Polish Airlines Flight 007 crash at Okęcie Airport in Warsaw. Despite her untimely death at the age of 29, her music continues to inspire new generations, and she is remembered as one of Poland's most iconic singers of the 1970s. Her daughter, Natalia Kukulska, would later follow in her footsteps, becoming a successful singer in her own right, continuing the family’s musical legacy.
